Sugarcane farmers want to reap the benefits

SALIMA (MalawiTalk) – Sugarcane growers have teamed up to seek protection from government from exploitive millers.

The Sugarcane Growers Association of Malawi (SUGAM) president Mr Flighton Njolomole said after an emergency board meeting in Salima Thursday that the industry is failing to grow because growers are not benefiting from their toil as the sector is using outdated operational guidelines.

SUGAM acting Executive Secretary, Mr Charles Chavi, has since implored on government to expedite processing the sugar bill which, he believes, would protect growers from abuse.

He claims it is only in Malawi where the sugar industry is not regulated and growers are at the mercy of millers.
