LILONGWE (MalawiTalk) – Opposition leader Mr Kondwani Nankhumwa has demanded explanation from government as to why over 75 Malawi Congress Party (MCP) youths are undergoing military training at Mtakataka Police Training School in Dedza.

Making his remarks at the end of the Budget Review session in Parliament on Friday, Nankhumwa said:   “Malawians surely deserve to know the truth and the reasons why MCP would want to train its youths in how to use firearms. Is MCP planning to resurrect the notorious Malawi Young Pioneers (MYP)?” he said.

“This is no time for militias. Africa remains bruised by the untold pains caused by militias. The interahamwe caused havoc in Rwanda. Charles Taylor and his boys massacred many people in Liberia. It is militias that distabilised Siera Leone. The Tigray region in Ethiopia is feeling the impact of the same weight of militiaism. The Northern part of Mozambique is no better as Islamic fundamentalists have capitalized on militiaism to wreak havoc. Nigeria is no better in the north,” he noted.

He added that Africa’s youngest state the South Sudan is still at no ease.

“The world’s richest mineral resource country the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC, is on the cross due to militias. The Bangui in Central Africa Republic is at no Ease. Mali is at no ease. Nigeria is at no Ease. Somalia is at its worst point. The bottom line to all these is the training of militias. We cannot afford to put Malawi on the same devastating and detrimental trajectory,” he noted.

Nankhumwa has since proposed that the Defence and Security Committee of Parliament must meet, as a matter of urgency, to immediately investigate and establish the truth of this matter.

On 17th March, Honourable Member for Mulanje South West made a statement on the same but the  Leader of the House Richard Chimwendo stopped Member for Mulanje South West  Dr George Chaponda from expounding on his allegation.

on Friday, Chimwendo defended the training of MCP cadres in the House, saying: “There is nothing wrong to have training for close protection under a security agent.”
