NTCHEU (Malawi News Agency)- A 27 year old man, Chifuniro Bulawo, is battling for his life at Ntcheu District Hospital after an angry mob in the district set him ablaze on Sunday.
Police came in time to save Bulawo from the irate mob at Kaufa Village in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Njolomole in the district, which wanted him burnt to death on allegation that he had stolen green maize.
Ntcheu Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Sub Inspector Rebecca Kwisongole, confirmed the development in an interview with Malawi News Agency (MANA) on Monday, saying police rushed to the scene following a tip from well-wishers.
“It is alleged that Chifuniro Bulawo was caught red handed stealing fresh maize in one of the gardens and angry villagers organised petrol which they used to set him ablaze while alive,” said Kwisongole.
She said police managed to rescue the suspected thief who was found with burnt wounds all over his body.
Meanwhile, Mr Bulawo is admitted to Ntcheu District Hospital receiving medical attention.
Ntcheu Police is advising the public to refrain from taking the law into their hands emphasising that doing so is against the law.
